Pandemonium ensued during a Dodgers-Giants showdown on Monday evening when powerhouse hitter Corey Seager sent a fly ball sailing towards the outfield. Rather than keeping on a straight path towards the left field benches, the ball took a sudden 90 degree turn, heading straight for a group of cardboard cutout fans in the stands near third base.
Die-hard fans pay upwards of $30,000 to have their faces on these cutouts, hoping to get their fifteen seconds of fame. Upper School English Department Chair Jessica Bremmer is one of those Dodger superfans. She says, “It was worth every penny. I did it for my son’s birthday.”
This boomerang of a fly ball, however, shot clean through the neck of one of the cardboard cutout fans.
“It spun like a boomerang,” says Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “I’ve never used a boomerang but I can imagine.”
Paramedics arrived on the scene immediately, preparing defibrillators to shock the cutout back to life. Unfortunately, said defibrillator sparked an electrical fire and a portion of the lower deck was engulfed in flames.
Dodgers and Giants players alike immediately abandoned their posts to help with relief efforts, tossing jugs of Gatorade on the blaze. Despite all the confusion, paramedics were able to move the cutout out of the affected area and into an ambulance waiting nearby.
