One of the many joys of lunchtime at Westridge School for Girls is witnessing the mysterious Man Lunch meetings during which Mr. Raines and Mr. Harrison enjoy a lovely meal with each other inside the comforting walls of the Commons or EC20. Man Lunch is central to the Westridge identity. It’s what makes our lunch feel...complete.
We don’t know much about the bromantic meal they share, but the mystery keeps us students going. Maybe they discuss idle gossip, like their least favorite students and colleagues, the weather, or some basketball game. Or maybe, they talk about the meaning of life, what happens when we die, if our souls get reincarnated to live again, what makes us innately kind or hateful, is there a heaven or hell. Or maybe they talk about assignments, giving each other tips and tricks on how to deal with the most illogical essays.
Since school has gone online, you can’t help but wonder what has happened to this cherished lunch meeting. Do they go the extra mile to set up a Man Lunch Teams meeting? Do they just eat together, or do they cook together, as well? Since they can no longer get lunch at the Commons, do they share recipes? If so, what kind of recipes make the cut for Man Lunch? Have they invited anyone else into their Man Lunch circle? If so, who and why? Have they grown apart since quarantine hit? Where is Mr. Seidman, and does he attend virtual meetings? How did Man Lunch start to begin with?? What does happen when we die???
Or maybe, just maybe (and this might be a bit of a stretch) Man Lunch isn’t even Man Lunch anymore. With the remote learning schedule, all order has gone out the window. We get out of class at 11:40, far too early to have a traditional lunch. So perhaps, it has become Man BRUNCH.
