Screw 21 Savage. The beat drop in “God’s Country” by Blake Shelton is the real deal. I used to be a self-proclaimed country-music-hater, but about four years ago, after listening to Florida Georgia Line and Old Dominion, I had an epiphany and decided to come out of the country music closet.
It hasn’t been easy; my friends don’t enjoy it when I’m in charge of the aux cord, nor do my parents when I’m on living room iPod duty. But I do.
I truly don’t understand the hatred for country music that’s ingrained in our society. Almost everything about the genre is perfect: the songs are lyrical and easy to sing along to, the beat drops rival those of Shoreline Mafia and Lil Uzi Vert, and the vibe as whole takes me to the wild West. (I don’t have much experience in the wild West but I’m imagining feral horses, fields of wheat, and neon bar signs here).
Anyways, there’s nothing quite like a long drive to Mount Wilson while you blast some country music on the Angeles Crest Highway. Mainstream indie hits just don’t have the same drama to them.
I know for a fact that your opinion on country music has changed as a result of this narrative, so to get you started, I’ll link my Spotify country playlist below. Reminder: you don’t have to be conservative to like country music, liberals can ride bulls, too!
