Interim has been the highlight of my Westridge experience. I’ve always ended up on the more… experimental interim adventures, and each time I can feel myself growing into a more respectful and responsible Westridge girl. I participated in Diavolo (interpretive dance on hard, angular surfaces) my freshman year, and EmpowHer (Westridge students learning about sexism for the first time, truly eye-opening) my sophomore year. I was very excited to finally have a normal, volunteering interim with PUSD last year, but alas, I stayed at home and researched if I could get the Covid-19 virus by making eye contact with someone who had it instead. These were trying times.
Well, it’s a new year, and we are still trying. I’ve accepted that my freshman year dream of snorkeling in the Bahamas may not come to fruition. With Covid restrictions in mind, I have drafted a flawless interim proposal that will connect the community, enforce Westridge's value of “responsibility” through service work, and require minimal preparation. The plan goes as follows: Westridge seniors who have their driver’s licenses will be paired with sophomores who need driving hours. The sophomores will practice driving, and the seniors will guide them as passengers on a road trip to visit Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska.

This plan hits at least four birds with one stone: 1) Carhenge is a unique piece of land art that will give Westridge students an opportunity to reflect on the capitalist machine. 2) The 40-hours round trip will be exactly enough driving to help sophomores prepare for their license exams. 3) Seniors will love this idea because after finishing their CAPs, a lot of them are aching to continue their lives of impact and to make a difference in the Westridge community. And, 4) freshmen and juniors will have no complaints about the extra week of spring break.
I expect credit and compensation when the rollout of this proposal takes place.
