Note: if you are struggling with your mental health, speak to whoever makes you feel safest -- even if it's an English teacher. Ms. Johnson, Dr. Carruthers, and Peer to Peer are also great resources.
I am a proud member of Westridge Peer to Peer, and a troubling phenomenon has been plaguing me recently: I have yet to talk to a Westridge student who hasn’t cried to an English teacher about their personal life. Are they stealing Peer to Peer’s clientele?
Everyone knows we can’t compete with the comforting, motherly presence of English teachers. These women have had to ease the tantrums of two-year-olds. They have had to reassure hundreds of students that getting the feedback "I have no idea what claim you are trying to make here" isn't actually reflective of our overall intelligence. They have had to read over-dramatic personal essays of all sorts. They understand sympathy. They are in touch with their emotions. They are ideal candidates for tearful ranting.
With our new Office Hour program starting, I can’t help but wonder if the English Department will put us out of business.
There is no way high schoolers with savior complexes can possibly be that healthy and regulated. So, this is my plea to you, Westridge English: join Peer to Peer. Since we can’t beat you, we’d like you to join our team. Office hours every Tuesday and Thursday after school!
